Becoming a writer

This is an excerpt from an interview on the Smashwords Website:

When did you become a writer ?

I started writing songs as a teenager. They were rubbish. In the mid seventies I was one of my band's songwriters. Most of the songs were the usual paranoid teen anguish and totally forgettable. Before you can say anything you have to have something to say. I became a Christian in 1990 and the experience inspired me to write. Songs, sermons, magazine articles flowed from my pen. A lot of what I wrote back then has been used in my later books.

What motivated you to become an indie author?

I've been recording and releasing albums of my mostly self written songs for the last twenty five years. Almost all of them have been self funded and distributed. I was on the books of a record company and released an album on their label back in the mid 90s but found the experience very restricting. I enjoy the creative freedom of being an indie. Once I've completed a project i tend to lose interest and focus on the next, so promoting my work is a chore I'd rather pass over to someone else.

Three or more years and half a dozen books later, I'm still no closer to getting the publicity and promotion stuff sorted. I really need someone to do my admin.

Dave Clemo - Author!

I've had a few health issues over the last few years. However, I've just celebrated ten years of remission from leukaemia and marked the occasion by cutting off my rather bedraggled ponytail. My annual cough has laid me low for several months each year and my attention turned to something that didn't rely on my singing voice.

As you can tell from this and all my other blogs I've written a few thousand words over the last twenty years and decided to turn a few of them into books. So now I'm an author! You can go into any branch of Waterstones and order a copy of my books.

An eBook version is just a click away. It's been a bit of a learning curve but I'm getting the hang of it now.

The first three titles cover my life in music in all its forms. A lot of the information was published on my blogs.

I'm currently working on the follow up to Back Street Genius and hope to have it published in 2021. Then there's a book about the history of the part of town where I live. The history can be traced back at least 2,500 years. That's a bit before my time. After that?

Who knows. What I do know is that I'll post odd snippets and discoveries on here if I think they are worth sharing.

I've been away for a while

What's seven years between friends? I've looked out my old blogsites and dusted them off. I'm going to start using them again.

Not sure exactly what I'll be posting about. The world has changed somewhat since 2013. My circumstances have changed as well.

I've retired from full time work. My health issues have put an end to regular gigging and as I'm in the 'at risk' category the lockdown may be permanent.

Since 2017 I've been busy writing books. I'll probably use this blog to update everyone of progress.

I'll post excerpts, pictures, reviews and links to sites where you can buy them. Speak soon!
